The Supreme Court of India has extended pension benefits to women Short Service Commission officers across India’s defence forces, offering relief through a special one-time order.
Under existing rules, personnel must serve for 20 years to qualify for pension. However, the court ruled that officers who were evaluated for Permanent Commission between 2019 and 2021 but later released will now be considered as having completed the required service period.
The decision comes after the court found gaps in the 2019 policy framework, particularly the sudden introduction of performance benchmarks without adequate preparation time. It also questioned the fairness of using service length as a measure of suitability.
The ruling will benefit officers who were denied Permanent Commission or declared ineligible during those selection rounds. While they will receive pension benefits starting November 2025, no backdated payments will be issued.
