Political tensions have escalated in Nepal as police arrested former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and ex-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over their alleged role in last year’s Gen Z protest killings.

Officials stated that the arrests were made to implement the findings of a commission that examined the violent crackdown on demonstrators. The report concluded that both leaders failed to prevent excessive use of force by security personnel.

The Gen Z protests, which led to the fall of the Oli government, witnessed widespread unrest and loss of life. Following the recent election victory of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Prime Minister Balendra Shah moved quickly to enforce the commission’s recommendations.

Authorities also indicated that further legal action could be taken against senior police officials involved during the protests.
